    Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, envisages healthy life-style for not just prevention of diseases but also for improvement of health. It also provides curative concepts for effective handling of diseases through various bio-purification methods and use of a treasure of natural resources and formulations made out of them. The do's and dont's, daily and seasonal regimens mentioned in Ayurveda enhances health. Code of ethics is a unique feature of health promotion in Ayurveda. The philosophical concepts in diagnosis and management of diseases are unique.

    In Ayurveda, a man is treated as a whole and makes full use of the natural elements. Versatile formulations made specifically for various diseases is another feature of Ayurveda.

    The main objectives of Ayurveda are the following:

    i. The regimen of the healthy man, which is the science of positive health and is called as svasthavrittam. This relates to wellness and rejuvenation.

    ii. The regimen of the patient, which is callled aturavrittam. This relates to treatment of diseases.

    In Ayurveda, the person (purusha) is considered to be the blend of body, mind and spirit. The peaceful and dynamic co-existence of these three aspects are important for maintaining health. The interactions and influences of vatha-pitha-kapha (called Thridosha theory of Ayurveda) determines the extent of health of the person.

    So, to treat a disease, full co-operation of the patient by way of strict dietary control and following doctors' instructions as such is essential.

    As a promotive health care system, Ayurveda provides various applications like Panchakarma and Kerala-specific treatments like Pizhichil, Navarakkizhi are also done. Panchakarma treatments are Vamanam,Virechanam,Vasthi, Nasyam and Rakthamoksham. The essence of Panchakarma lies in the proper application of the same to the individual concerned.

    Pizhichil, Navarakkizhi, Sirovasti, Pichu and Sirolepa are the part of swedana Karma which is considered as pre operative procedure of Panchakarma. In Kerala, these applications are modified and swedana karma are applied in required conditions only. Pizhichil, Abhyangam, Udwarthanam and various types of kizhi which are related with special massages required in the preoperative part of panchakarma.

    Incorporating modern massage techniques, physiotherapy are supportive activities to augment the health enhancement in Ayurvedic approach.
